How do I set up an old PC as a media server on my home network? - home media server

I would be able to get this device in my entertainment center and to see a connection to my TV movies / listen to music without needing to connect my laptop to the TV. I would be able to access media from the server on my laptop and server control to play movies on TV from the laptop.
